Robbery Charges in Washington
Seattle Robbery Lawyer
The crime of robbery is described in Washington criminal code RCW 9A.56.190. It states that a person commits robbery when he or she commits a theft of another person "by the use or threatened use of immediate force, violence, or fear of injury to that person or his or her property or the person or property of anyone." Unlike other theft crimes, robbery concerns a threat of harm and it is taken very seriously by both law enforcement and state prosecutors.

Washington splits robbery offenses in two different categories: first degree and second degree robbery. These distinctions depend on the circumstances of the alleged offense.
First degree robbery must include one of the following factors:
- The robbery of a financial institution
- The possession of a deadly weapon
- The exhibiting of a firearm or a deadly weapon
- Bodily injury inflicted on the victim
First degree robbery comes with a maximum possible sentence of life in prison. Second degree robbery—which is defined as all other robberies without the previously listed factors—can result in up to 14 years in prison if a conviction is reached. Hefty fines are also associated with either offense.
